Year 5 Assessment & Reporting

Teachers utilise a number of ways to continually assess pupils’ learning and check their understanding e.g. clarification of learning outcomes, setting targets, marking, questioning, presentations, quizzes and independent work.

In addition, a number of summative assessments are undertaken during the year to assess progress. Advance warning of these assessments will be given as deemed necessary by the class teacher.

Literacy

During the course of the year the children’s reading and writing skills will be assessed. Spelling tests take place weekly. Grammar is assessed within the children’s written work.

Mathematics

The children are assessed in Maths twice a year.  The first assessment will take place towards the end of the first term to track the children’s progress against their personal targets.

Formative assessments take place frequently throughout the week to monitor the children’s understanding of each Maths concept and monitor progress.

End of Year Assessments

Year 5 children undertake end of year assessments in Literacy and Mathematics in May. The results for these assessments are recorded on your child’s end of year report and enable you to see how your child is progressing from one year to the next.

Past assessment papers are used to help prepare the children so that they are familiar with the layout and the expectations.  These are usually sent home over the Easter break.

Please be encouraged to keep all assessments in perspective. The objective of the test is to assess your child’s understanding of the work undertaken in Year 5 and their ability to meet the assessment criteria. Help your child to learn from the successes and mistakes that they make in their assessments. All children at this age usually make avoidable errors and are learning to cope with timed tasks.

Children should be aware that it is their approach, attitude and personal performance in their work in school throughout the year that is important.
