Key Stage 3

During Years 7 and 8, the Key Stage 3 syllabus provides a solid foundation for the future years, consolidating their knowledge of number, algebra, shape and data handling and developing the pupils’ awareness of mathematical concepts in real-life situations.

The scheme of work in Year 9 reinforces the knowledge gained in the previous years, as well as introducing new concepts such as Pythagoras’ theorem, trigonometry, statistical methods and more advanced algebra. At the end of Year 9, the pupils will sit the Key Stage 3 Optional SAT exams.

Throughout Key Stage 3, pupils are shown how to use the calculator for complex operations, but are also encouraged to use mental arithmetic whenever possible.

Currently, the department is using the Oxford Maths Links 7C, 8C and 9C textbooks for Years 7 to 9. Each book is accompanied by a Homework book with further examples and questions to consolidate whatever is learnt in the classroom. These books aim to prepare pupils for the IGCSE (Higher) course and cover all of Levels 5 through to 8 at Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum (UK).

In addition the department offers booster lessons to students in key stage 3.  These are usually teacher recommended and they run throughout the year helping students overcome their difficulties in the subject.

Key Stage 4

In Year 10, pupils begin the Edexcel IGCSE (Higher) course. This is a two-year course, with the exam taken at the end of Year 11. The course introduces advanced number work, geometry, sets and more complex algebraic manipulation. The department uses the IGCSE Mathematics A Book 1 by Collins.

The Year 11 pupils continue with the IGCSE course, delving in topics such as differentiation, three-dimensional geometry, vectors and more applied mathematics. They take the external IGCSE examination at the end of this year. The text book used is the IGCSE Mathematics A Book 2 by Collins.

At the end of Year 11, pupils take the higher tier of the Edexcel IGCSE examination which is targeted at grades A* to D. The IGCSE examination consists of two external written 2- hour examination papers of equal weight. Pupils are expected to have access to a suitable scientific calculator for both examination papers.

 

The IGCSE course covers the following areas of Mathematics:

  • Using and Applying Mathematics
  • Number and Algebra
  • Shape, Space and Measure
  • Handling Data.

Pupils are encouraged to use mental calculation wherever appropriate but are also taught how to use calculators when dealing with problems involving more complex calculations.

Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form)

Pupils have the option to begin the Edexcel AS course in Year 12. The department uses the Heinemann books throughout the AS and A2 course. Pupils may choose between the standard “full” A-Level, covering six modules over the course of two years or (depending on demand) the AS, “half” A-Level, completing 3 modules spanning the two years.

The examinations are taken through Edexcel and all the courses are modular: 3 units are necessary for an AS award and 6 units for a single A-Level.

Pupils studying for the A-Level in Mathematics may be able, depending on demand and/or if options timetabling allows, choose between:

·         Pure Mathematics with Statistics units: (C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, S2)

This option is recommended for pupils planning to follow university courses in Accountancy, Actuarial Studies, Business Management, Economics, Biology, Geography, Environmental Studies, Medicine, Social Sciences and Statistics.

Pupils may take C1, C2 and C3 at the end of Year 12. They will sit C4, S1 and S2 at the end of Year 13.

  • Sometimes students may choose the AS Level if they wish to have some A Level Mathematics knowledge prior to attending university but would rather focus on other academic areas.  Students choosing the AS Level will study C1 and C2 during Year 12, sitting the exams for both modules at the end of the year. In Year 13, they will sit the S1 exam.
  • This year due to great demand our keen Mathematicians were able to follow an additional AS in Mathematics in year 13 thus completing one and a half A level in Mathematics.
  • It is planned (again depending on demand and timetabling) that as from next academic year students will be able to take double A level in Mathematics and will include Further Pure as well as Mechanics and Decision Mathematics units.  This course gives a good foundation in the subject, for any course involving Mathematics. This option is recommended for students planning to follow university courses in Mathematics, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computing or Avionics.

Below are the Mathematics IGCSE, AS and A2 results for years 2013 – 2015 and year 9 KS3 Sat results 2015. We are delighted that so many of our students obtained excellent results in IGCSE, AS and A2 examinations. We would like to congratulate all the students for their hard work and effort in achieving these excellent results.
