History

History at the Senior School is a very popular subject across all the Key Stages. Students follow the National Curriculum covering British, African-American, and World history. Students are taught many skills standing them in good stead for any career. There are also opportunities for ‘out-of-classroom’ learning in GCSE History. Year 7

In Year 7 students get an introduction to skills in History, such as Chronology, evidence, interpretation and enquiry. They use these skills throughout their careers as Historians and study the following topics and time periods, The Roman Empire, Roman Life and Medieval Realms to include the Black Death , the Norman conquest of 1066, Feudalism and medieval life and religion.

Year 8

In Year 8 students discover the wonders of ‘The Making of the United Kingdom’ exploring the Tudor reign and life. They then move on to ‘The Black People’s of America’ where students examine the causes of slavery and the conditions the slaves faced. Students develop their source work skills within these topics.

Year 9

In Year 9 students continue where they left off from year 8, where they examine how slavery ended and the establishment of human rights. The students then study Britain between 1750 – 1900, focusing on life in Britain at this time, the Industrial revolution and the rights of women leading up to World War I. Students will then examine how conflict in the 20th Century impacted on people’s lives through examining and analysing sources.

Year 10 and 11

In Year 10 and 11 students have the option of taking History IGCSE where the Edexcel IGCSE syllabus is followed. History is a valuable subject helping students to acquire knowledge and understanding of historical events, people, changes and issues. Students will be able to use historical sources critically, organise and communicate their knowledge and understanding of history and draw conclusions and make historical judgments. Students will have the opportunity to study the following topics:

  • A World Divided: International Relations, 1919 – 1939: Collective security and appeasement
  • The fall of Communism in Europe 1979-1991
  • A World Divided: International Relations and the Superpowers: Cold War and Co-existence, 1945 – 62
  • Europe, 1945 – 90’s: Divided and United
  • The Changing role of International Organisations: The League of Nations and the Work of the United Nations 1945 – present (Exam Paper, alternative to coursework)

Year 12 and 13

In Year 12 and 13 A level History is currently a very popular choice with students. Students develop extended writing skills; research and analytical skills and develop a broad understanding of the world’s past and current political situation. The Senior School follows the Edexcel A level course.
In the AS year the topics studied in Unit I are ‘Pursuing life and liberty: Equality in the USA 1945-68’ and ‘Ideology Conflict and Retreat: The USA in Asia 1950-73’. In Unit 2 students study ‘Britain and the Nationalist Challenge in India 1900-47’. In the A2 year in Unit 3 students examine Germany in 1900-1945. Unit 4 is coursework, based around student research and report writing on ‘The Middle East and the Arab Israeli Conflict, c1900-2001’.

All students in Humanities subjects are assessed regularly and in a variety of ways,

  • Formative and summative

  • End of unit enquiries
  • Half of unit assessment tests
  • End of Year examination/Mock exams
  • Fieldwork (if relevant)
