Geography

Geography at The Senior School is an exciting and dynamic subject. Every effort is made to make it interesting and relevant to students’ lives. Students are taught many skills standing them in good stead for any career. There are also numerous opportunities for out-of-classroom learning. Year 7

In Key Stage 3 Geography students start their journey in Year 7 by learning Key Geographical skills; such as map and atlas skills; drawing and interpreting diagrams and sketches and being able to identify the human and physical features of the world. As they progress students will be move on to topics like Settlements, Shopping, Rivers and Flooding, and Exploring Cyprus.

Year 8

In Year 8 students build on the skills they have already learnt and study topics which include Coasts, Weather and Climate, Ecosystems, Energy and Resources, and Our Warming Planet. This is where students really begin to get a good understanding on the value of resources and our ecological footprint. They will fully understand the impacts we have on our world and will begin to come up with solutions to these impacts.

Year 9

In Year 9 students really challenge their view of the world by studying World Development, Trade and Globalisation, Earthquakes and Volcanoes and Tourism.

Year 10 and 11

In Year 10 and 11 we follow the GCSE Specification A by Edexcel. Students will have a solid foundation of Geography from Key Stage 3 and will study similar and new topics in more depth. The course outline is as follows:

  • Unit 1: Geographical Skills and Challenges

    This unit will build on the skills learnt in Years 7, 8 and 9 and give students new challenges and the opportunity to develop more advanced skills appropriate for a GCSE geographer. Students will learn about two of the major issues facing the world today – climate change and sustainable development.

  • Unit 2: The Natural Environment

    This unit is based on physical geography and students will need to study one of the following topics:

    • Coastal Landscapes
    • River Landscapes
    • Glaciated Landscapes
    • Tectonic Landscapes

    Plus one of these topics:

    • A Wasteful World
    • A Watery World.
  • Unit 3: The Human Environment

    This unit is based on human geography and students will study one of the following topics:

    • Economic Change
    • Farming and the Countryside
    • Settlement Change
    • Population Change

    Plus one of these topics:

    • A Moving World
    • A Tourist’s World.
  • Unit 4: Investigating Geography (fieldwork coursework)

    This unit will involve going out of the school to carry out fieldwork and then writing it up. The final writing up will be carried out in class time. It is vital that you are not absent on the days we complete fieldwork outside of school.

Year 12 and 13

In Year 12 and 13 students have the opportunity to study Geography A level (exam board is Edexcel). This is a very valuable and challenging A level subject which includes skills from Statistics, Economics, Geology, Travel and Tourism, Politics and History.

AS

In the AS, Unit 1 focuses on Natural Hazards, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Globalisation, Trade, Development and Human Migration. In addition there is a research component in Unit 2 which is based on Coastal Development and Regional Inequalities within cities and across rural areas.

A2

The A2 is an extremely current and exciting course where topics like the Development Gap, Superpower Geographies, Energy Crisis, Water Crisis and The Technological Fix are explored in depth in Unit 3. In Unit 4 students have the opportunity to research an area of interest based on the options given and eventually produce and extended report based on their research under exam conditions.

All students in Humanities subjects are assessed regularly and in a variety of ways,

  • Formative and summative
  • Class work and homework activities will be assessed
  • End of unit enquiries
  • Half of unit assessment tests
  • End of Year examination/Mock exams
  • Fieldwork (if relevant)
